Impulse-buying Adds "Stuff"

Is a Sale a Savings?

Stores are smart -- they put all these interesting things and "oh, that might be useful" gadgets near the checkout lanes so we'll be tempted to get them, even if we don't need them. And, we wonder how we end up with all "this stuff!"

I admit, I've been guilt of impulse-buying. But, knowing this, I've made a big effort to curb my enthusiasm for those unplanned purchases that sit there having me ask myself if I could use another nail clipper or not.

Same goes with those items on sale. I just saw all these Christmas decorations on sale and I only went to the store to get blank tapes. Boy, was I tempted. I looked at them, I touched them, I stood back and watched them. I did everything except put them in my shopping cart. Reason was, after careful examination and asking myself a dozen questions about my need for more Christmas decorations, I decided the best thing was to pass up the store's wonderful offer.

I mean, how are we really "saving" if we hadn't planned on making the purchase in the first place? Didn't I "save" money by NOT buying something?

Yes, it took will-power. This decision-making is not for the weak. Yet, when I walked out of the store, I was proud of myself. And, that gave me a sense of accomplishment I hadn't planned on.
